Edwidge Danticat, Valeria Luiselli, Nadifa Mohamed

The Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat’s texts focus on the life of women and their relationships. Valeria Luiselli’s latest novel, "Lost Children Archive", focuses on the current migration policy in the United States. In her novels, Nadifa Mohamed explores the colonial history of Africa and the struggles of women facing abuse. The three authors will discuss the feminist-literary examination of family and social dynamics.

Elena Poniatowska and Michi Strausfeld

Michi Strausfeld, who is one of the 50 most renowned scholars of Latin American cultural life, will digitally meet with the writer, journalist, and Cervantes award-winner Elena Poniatowska, whose works lend a voice to all the disadvantaged and outcasts of society. Topics will include the considerations of social and political developments in the context of how they are viewed from a poetic-literary perspective. Strausfeld paints a picture of Poniatowska in her 2019 book "Gelbe Schmetterlinge und die Herren Diktatoren: Lateinamerika erzählt seine Geschichte".

Alaa al-Aswani and Stefan Weidner

Alaa al-Aswani, a »successful contemporary author in the Arabic-speaking world« [NZZ], who is involved with the opposition movement »Kifaja«, will digitally meet with Islamic scholar, author, and translator Stefan Weidner, whose work has made a significant contribution to the dialogue between Western and Islamic culture. They will discuss the perspectives of literary texts in dealing with religious authorities, abuse of power, and social grievances.

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and Alvin Pang

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor is a Writer in Residence of the Cluster of Excellence "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective" at the Freie Universität Berlin in autumn of 2020. In her new novel, she researches regional archetypes of the African continent, which she reinterprets and embeds in a family history. She will meet with Alvin Pang – poet, essayist, translator, and editor, whose poems depict the psychological, emotional, and political contours of Singapore with a new urban language.
