Literature Festival | Assemblage Berlin. 60 Years of Intermediality in Literature

A cooperation between the EXC 2020 and the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.

2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB). With the festival “Assemblage Berlin. 60 Years of Intermediality in Literature” scholars from the Cluster of Excellence “Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective” at Freie Universität Berlin, as well as artists and LCB members, will jointly recall the extended notion of literature as conceived by Walter Höllerer, founding director of the LCB. From the beginning, Höllerer specifically promoted an active exchange between the arts. With the aim of “making the boundaries between literature, literary criticism and the study of literature permeable”, he invited critical publicists, proponents of visual poetry, radio play authors and filmmakers alongside novelists, playwrights and poets to the workshops, conferences and discussions hosted by the LCB. In 1964, the LCB established its own in-house photography and film department. The numerous films produced by LCB will be shown for the first time in a comprehensive Berlin-wide retrospective as part of the festival.

The “Assemblage Berlin” literature festival will address the idea of intermediality from both artistic and academic perspectives, focusing on the LCB as a venue and an object of research. Examining the LCB’s then progressive views on literature as an art in a technological age, the festival’s four sections look to question contemporary literary creation in the digital age and the globalized production and distribution of literature. To achieve this, in addition to film screenings, academic talks and panel discussions, the festival will offer live presentations, performances and workshops by contemporary artists and authors. Audiovisual exhibits such as films, listening posts and an AI-generated spatial installation will be complemented by an exhibition that addresses one of the central research questions of the EXC 2020 “Temporal Communities”, using the series of LCB editions published between 1968 and 1989 to emphasise how literature extends across space and time.
