Publication | Jutta Müller-Tamm, Sylwia Werner (Eds.): Mobile Avantgarden. Netzwerke der Moderne im nördlichen und östlichen Europa
News from May 21, 2025
The most recent collective volume edited by Jutta Müller-Tamm (Research Area 4: "Literary Currencies") in collaboration with Sylwia Werner (University of Konstanz) is dedicated to forgotten avant-garde and modernist movements in Northern and Eastern Europe. Literary and cultural-historical scholarship tends to focus on the western part of Europe while neglecting the Scandinavian, Baltic and East-Central European sites of modernism in the arts and literature. Accordingly, the emergence of the phenomenon and the avant-gardes that produced it are still largely equated with the history of the West.
In order to fill this lacuna, the collection explores the interactions and migratory movements of avant-garde actors and concepts from a Pan-European perspective, opening up new fields of research through interdisciplinary cooperation between German, Scandinavian, Baltic and Slavic studies as well as art and cultural studies.
Mobile Avantgarden. Netzwerke der Moderne im nördlichen und östlichen Europa is the twenty-fifth volume of the series WeltLiteraturen / World Literatures (De Gruyter 2025).
