'Widsith' und die Geburt der altenglischen Lyrik aus dem Geist der Epik

'Widsth' ist eine jener wenigen altenglischen Elegien, die eine auffällige formale Komplexität mit einer inhaltlichen Thematisierung des Dichtens verbinden. Das Kapitel zeigt am Beispiel dieses Gedichts, wie die englische Dichtung des Frühmittelalters auf performativem Wege ein spezifisches Konzept des Lyrischen entfaltet hat. Sie entwarf dieses Konzept, so die These, indem sie die Lyrik historisch und formal gleichsam aus der Epik herausschälte und damit ihrem Lyrikkonzept eine Art literarhistorischer Fundierung und Folie gab. Indem sie ihre poetologische Funktion performativ austellt, wird die Lyrik in 'Widsith' zum literaturtheoretischen Experimentallabor.
Drawing on the example of 'Widsith', one of the few Old English elegies to combine striking formal complexity with sophisticated metapoetical reflections, the essay demonstrates how early medieval English poetry developed and unfolded, by performative means, a specific understanding of the lyric. As argued by Johnston, the texts in question carved out a space for lyric poetry beyond the confines of the epic, thereby furnishing the underlying poetics with a formal and literary-historical foil and foundation while also allowing the distinct domain of the lyric to operate as a kind of laboratory in which literary-theoretical concepts could be put to the test.
