Exhibit and Lecture | TANGO TRANSLATION TYPOGRAPHY. On Avant-Garde Poetics and Popular Culture in the Early 1910s

Dec 04, 2023 | 06:00 PM

An EXC 2020 CONSTELLATIONS project in cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz), curated and organised by Susanne Frank, Anna Luhn, Eugene Ostashevsky with Olaf Hamann and Sabine Kaiser (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin)

In 1914 Vasilij Kamenskij published Tango with Cows, a book of poetry and a key work of Russian Futurism and graphic design. Printed on pentagonal pages made of floral wallpaper, the poems invented a new type of visual poetry between the figurative and the concrete.

Award-winning poet and translator Eugene Ostashevsky and designer Daniel Mellis have translated Kamensky’s work into English and will present their work on the occasion of an intricate translated edition being donated to the Staatsbibliothek. Eugene Ostashevsky will speak about Kamensky the Futurist artist, his exceptional work, his multiple references to early twentieth-century popular culture and the challenges of translating Tango with Cows for the 21st century. The event is part of the project TANGO TRANSLATION TYPOGRAPHY.

The event will be held in English.

Admission is free. Please register at constellations@temporal-communities.de.
