Das abjekte Bild in der italienischen Tragödie der Renaissance
Maraike Di Domenica – 2026
This chapter investigates the strategic role of messenger reports in Italian Renaissance tragedy, showing how they become the principal and exclusive vehicle for expressing the abject. Functioning as both a structural and stylistic device, the messenger report imposes order and distance while simultaneously rendering the horror and repulsion of the abject into the tragic idiom. Through this mechanism, what is normally cast out or deemed unspeakable is reshaped and reabsorbed into the dramatic narrative. Italian horror tragedy of the Secondo Cinquecento, in particular, illustrates this process, offering a linguistic acknowledgment of a range of disturbing themes – such as child torture, cannibalism, acrotomophilia, and the disquieting allure of love and desire.
