The highly popular, fully illustrated German edition of Petrarch's international bestseller De remediis utriusque fortune, published in Augsburg in 1532, offers a complex pictorial programme that requires a considerable amount of interpretation. The artist, known as the 'Petrarch Master', at times ingeniously conveys Petrarch's ideological messages, but often also suggests contrary readings of the core themes from Petrarch's dialogue book. Particularly in challenging scenes of violence and deformation, the imagery of the woodcuts resists uniform, simplistic exegesis, at the same time producing a particularly impressive effect on the reader's memory.
