Mohammad Al-Attar, a Syrian playwright and essayist and current Dorothea Schlegel Artist in Residence at EXC 2020, wrote the libretto for Searching for Zenobia, an opera currently being shown at the Staatstheater Braunschweig.

Set in Berlin in 2025, the opera tells the story of Leyla, who comes across the diary of her dying mother Zeina. Zeina is a Syrian archaeologist who has dedicated herself to researching the ancient history of Palmyra and its legendary ancient queen Zenobia, until the war in Syria forced her to flee and seek refuge in Germany with her daughter.

Musical compositions are from Lucia Ronchetti in collaboration with the Syrian musicians Mais Harb and Elias Aboud.
